NDT for the Medical sector

The medical sector has a different set of demands for inspection of defects. Here, the highest priority for inspection products is that they do not contain materials that present health and safety concerns, either during use or downstream. Testing within this sector varies from the non-destructive testing associated with the inspection of prosthesis to destructive testing associated with leak testing of sterile packaging.

Magnaflux penetrants are widely used in the health sector. For example, our ZYGLO® fluorescent penetrants are used for high-end inspection of joint replacement components, and our SPOTCHECK® visible penetrants are used during in-process controls for leak testing.

Medical implant characteristics:

• Compatibility with the human body.
• Desired mechanical and physical properties – elasticity, yield stress, ductility, ultimate strength, fatigue strength, hardness, wear resistance.
• Ease of fabrication – reproducible, consistent, conformance to technical/biological standards.

Why is NDT critical for medical implants?

Need to find fine defects during the manufacturing, finishing and polishing of medical implants that could bring about subsequent failure of the component during use – for example, flexing of stems under load.
