Within the marine sector, NDT inspection is primarily used to carry out assessments on commercial vessels including tankers, bulk carriers, ferries, cruise liners, barges, and floating production storage and offloading units.
Liquid penetrant or magnetic particle inspection is commonly used to inspect cracked welded joints and areas identified as being susceptible to environmental cracking – for example: stress corrosion cracking or hydrogen induced cracking, fatigue cracking or creep cracking. More specifically, liquid penetrant inspection is used to inspect machined surfaces, and magnetic particle inspection is used to inspect heat-treated surfaces.
A benefit of liquid penetrant or magnetic particle inspection is that this work can be carried out whilst a vessel is either inshore or at sea.
